After suspending the GRE Subject Tests in 2020 due to COVID, ETS is bringing them back with the first administration coming on April 10, 2021.

Here’s the official statement from ETS with the details:

“Thanks to the many institutions that have stepped forward to offer space on their campuses, the in-person administration of the GRE® Subject Tests will move forward and be held on April 10, 2021. Institutions that use GRE Subject Test scores as part of their admissions decisions can expect to receive scores beginning in mid-May 2021.

The GRE Subject Tests are achievement tests that measure applicants’ knowledge of a particular field of study. They are intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of these six disciplines:

  • Biology*
  • Chemistry
  • Literature in English*
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

The availability of testing in specific locations is dependent upon the prevalence of COVID-19 infections and government mandates by region — factors that are outside of ETS’s control. Therefore, some applicants may not be able to submit GRE Subject Test scores.

In other good news, graduate physics programs will — for the first time — receive subscores in three content areas for the GRE® Physics Test, in addition to the total score. The subscores are Classical Mechanics; Electromagnetism; and Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics. Visit our website to learn more.

As we mark the one-year anniversary of the launch of the GRE® General Test at home, I’m also pleased to share that more than 300,000 individuals have opted to test from the safety of their homes — in addition to those who have opted to test at centers worldwide.

Please visit the GRE Subject Test or COVID-19 updates web pages to learn more. If you need ETS’s support during this time or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

*  Note that the Biology and Literature in English Subject Tests will be discontinued after the April 2021 administration.”
